Around Hautvillers

So, after all of this planning your dream get away, you've made it all the way to the Champagne region of France. Congratulations! This is a wonderful corner of the world sprinkled with delicious food, so-so weather, but oh-so-divine wine. You've been dreaming about spending time in one of those quintessentially adorable little villages that pepper the imagination, full of cute houses, oozing charm, and with small family-run wineries that peddle those hard-to-find bottles of bubbly.

If this sounds like what you've been thinking of, then Hautvillers is probably the town you've imagined. Located up in the hills above Épernay, this picturesque little village is the much more appealing (aesthetically, anyway) village compared to its more famous neighbor next door. Ben and I briefly explored this town, but would gladly spend much more time here on future trips.

Don't miss Hautvillers when you visit Champagne - its glorious lookouts over the fields of grapes, the church that holds the final resting place of the father of champagne, Dom Pérignon, the cute forged-iron signs that hang above almost every building in town, and the wines that are sold right here are worth checking out when in the neighborhood. We will most definitely be back.

Hautvillers Details

Hautvillers is about a 10 minute drive outside of Épernay, and about a 30 minute drive from Reims.

There are a few restaurants and places to stay, but the restaurants were closed on the day that we visited. The one restaurant/wine tasting room that we had heard was great and had wanted to try was Au 36, but unfortunately they were closed. Next time!
