Blessed with a surprising amount of history, its location at the mouth of the Douro River has helped put one of the world's great wines on the map. After all, port wine gets it name not from the valley it comes from (the Douro Valley) but the city where merchants picked it up while embarking on their travels around the world - Porto!

Be sure to bring some sturdy walking shoes for the serious hills, as well as your sense of adventure - Porto is now on the travel map, but you won't feel like a member of the horde just yet.
