Washington State

Previous to 2022, I hadn't spent much time in Washington State. That all changed when our friends got a new job in Seattle, followed by Ben later joining at a nearby hotel. Though I still consider Hawai‘i my home, I was able to spend a lot more time in Washington State, and wanted to explore all of its corners with the limited time I had there.

What I've found is that Washington State is incredibly beautiful, less gloomy than I anticipated, and more fun than perhaps those from other areas of the country realize. Let's check it out.

Washington State Regions

Though most people may think that Washington State is rainy, cloudy, and covered in towering pine trees, the truth is the state has many different climate zones, including dry, arid deserts, as well as alpine summits to lovely coastal communities. Washington also has some exciting cities, including my favorite, Seattle.

Seattle

Seattle is Washington State's largest and most populous city, and a real gem. With a thriving cultural scene, well thought out public spaces and access to so much action, a trip to Washington State needs to include Seattle.

Not a fan of big cities? Seattle is big enough to have all the perks of a large metropolitan area without the sprawl. It's quirky, and depending on the time of year, not always very sunny (though July and August really pull out all the stops!), but if you love truly scenic cities with all the trappings of big city life, then Seattle is the place for you.

Ballard Locks

Salmon ladders? Boat locks? Botanical Gardens? Sea lions? If you're looking for some action, the Ballard Locks have something going on all times of the year.

University of Washington Arboretum and Japanese Garden

A perfect place for a stroll with an impressive collection of plants from around the world, as well as a beautiful formal Japanese garden.

Space Needle

Seattle's iconic spire offers incredible views of the surrounding neighborhoods and shorelines. It's home in Seattle Center is home to professional sports and world-class entertainment.

Looking for something a little quieter, but still with quick access to the bright lights of Seattle? Bainbridge Island, a 40 minute ferry ride across the Puget Sound from Seattle, offers the best of both world. Quaint and quiet with a welcoming feeling, a visit to Bainbridge is a nice respite from all the hustle and bustle of the city across the way.

Skagit Valley

About an hour south of the Canadian border, and roughly an hour away from Seattle lies the Skagit Valley, a charming rural area famous for their tulips. Spring is brimming with excitement as growers and visitors look forward to the annual Tulip Festival, where tulip growers open their fields to the masses. If you can't make it to the Netherlands, the Skagit Valley is the definitely next best thing.
